Day Three: Crystal Cove Coral Lab

This morning started out with a coral lab at Crystal Cove. This was a special trip as local Hawaiians are not even allowed in this area. Thanks to Uncle Dennis and Kumu Monica, we had special permission to enter. This was one of the more difficult entries for the students requiring a "giant stride entry". Students hiked down lava rocks and then jumped away from the shore to enter the water. There, they measured the diversity of coral species.

Next we visited the heiau built by Kamehameha as a symbol of his mana (power). There Uncle Dennis talked story.

After dinner, we learned about Hawaiian myths and legends from Kumu Monica. She shared stories of her genealogy, Pele, and the Night Marchers
